So you couldn't go to the RWA conference
in Reno this year. Don't feel bad. It's hot here. They say it
will be 101 degrees today, and I'm supposed to go to Virginia City with the Wet
Noodle Posse.
You can have a taste of the conference daily (well,
I'll give it a try anyway. Thursday may do me in). Just check my
website for the pictures and a quick travelogue. I'll even post some
photos of the awards ceremony Saturday night, if they let me get back to my room
before I collapse.
Monday is not an official conference day, but we got
here early as a lot of people did for special events on Tuesday. We flew
in on a very nice flight from Portland, Oregon, to a sunny but not too hot
day. Other people described flights that we might call difficult, with
lots of delays, but I haven't heard any horror stories.
I wasn't aware
this is the old MGM Grand Hotel that had a horrific fire in the early
1980s. I think that was 1980 or 81. I had a very frightening dream
the night before the fire about being in a burning hotel and trying to help
people get out alive. This is not the way my dream saw the hotel, but it's
kind of freaky anyway. Today the lobby area seems to be all casinos, and
has a tinge of smoke that is not pleasant, but the rooms are nice.

01 Monday: Some of this year's Golden Heart
finalists got together at Chevy's to meet for the first time. We've
been emailing each other and sharing experiences and ideas since the
announcement in March. Down the left, Delilah Ahrendt, Valentina (Tina)
Plant, Patricia (Trish) Milburn, Barbara (friend of Kathleen, didn't get her
last name),Lorelle Marinello, Ardath Albee, Kathleen Bacus, Terry
MacLaughlin. I'm taking the pic so no, you don't get to see
me.
02Monday: Our cute waiter liked being the center of attention
and was excited about te idea that soon there would be 2100 people, mostly women
who write romance, right here in his hotel. Delilah and Tina got his
attention right away, but he escaped before I got his name.
I was late
getting to this group because I was having dinner with finalists from 2003, my
beloved Wet Noodle Posse. I took some photos of them too, but beautiful
women should never be shown is such awful photos. I promised to do better
by them today in Virginia City.
